About
Shaw Energy Compliance
Hi, I’m Emma.
My journey into energy consultancy hasn’t been a completely straightforward one, but the different experiences I’ve had along the way have shaped the way I approach my work today.
I’ve always had an interest in the built environment and a strong appreciation for the natural environment around us. I spent a lot of my teenage years in Wales, which gave me a real connection with the countryside and nature, and an appreciation of the importance of protecting the environment. That interest has stayed with me throughout my career.
I studied Civil Engineering at the University of Portsmouth, but after graduating I found it difficult to find a role in the industry. Instead, I spent several years working in hospitality, where I worked my way up into general management and senior roles, including working in award-winning restaurants.
Although hospitality wasn't the career path I had originally planned, it gave me a huge amount of valuable experience. Managing teams, dealing with clients, solving problems and working in demanding environments all helped develop skills that I still rely on today.
I eventually returned to my passion for the built environment and studied Sustainability in the Built Environment. During this time, I developed a particular interest in how energy flows through buildings and the opportunities to improve their performance.
That interest led me into energy consultancy, where I spent five years developing my knowledge and experience under the guidance of some fantastic mentors. During this time, I worked on a wide range of projects, including energy audits, carbon reporting, decarbonisation studies, ESOS audits and strategies, alongside building energy compliance and certification.
This experience gave me a broad understanding of how buildings use energy, the challenges organisations face when looking to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions, and how technical information can be turned into practical, achievable solutions.
After five years in consultancy, I felt ready to take the next step and establish my own business. That decision led to the creation of Shaw Energy Compliance — a business built around providing clear, practical and professional energy and compliance services.
I wanted to bring together my engineering background, sustainability knowledge, consultancy experience and the people skills I had developed through hospitality to provide a service that is both technically robust and easy for clients to understand.
For me, energy consultancy isn't just about producing a report or completing a certificate. It's about understanding the building, understanding the client and providing clear, practical advice that can genuinely make a difference.
